Jedi “Mistress” Phaenia of the Unified Force Academy was a young girl from one of the mid-level social classes on her shadowy home planet of Umbara when she was identifed as having abilities in the Force. Her family was proud to see her selected for Jedi training, as it brought a certain level of prestige, and thus raised their social standing on their world.

As a youngling, Phaenia showed great aptitude with mechanical and electronic devices. Her race is prone to being secretive and reclusive, and Phaenia took to working on broken equipment rather than spending time with other younglings practicing with the lightsaber. She was selected as a Padawan to a Pau’an Jedi Master, as his race also favored the darker environs that Umbarans prefer. He taught her many of the introspective Force techniques such as Farseeing, Foresight, and Force Visions. She also discovered some others on her own, particularly the dangerous use of Force Lightning, believing that she could use it to power repaired devices or droids… though she quickly discovered that its use was tapping directly into the Darkside, so she avoids using it and keeps knowledge of it secret. Originating from the mysterious and remote world of Gand, Qillon Kree is a veteran of the Great Sith War and a formidable jedi master in his own right. The stocky master has until recently gone only by the name “Gand,” a response to some personal failure he felt during the War. More recently, especially after the successful Treaty of Morymm that saw that world enter the Republic, he has again assumed his name.

Qillon is soft spoken and introspective, rarely given to rash action or passions. However, he advocates a more aggressive approach to the Jedi order, and as such he can be provoked to a whirling frenzy, a practitioner of dual lightsaber techniques. Where others would council hesitation and the slow road, Qillon’s experences in the Sith War gives him the instincts of fast and decisive action. (more…)

Padawan originally to the Gand jedi Master Qillon Kree, Quest was discovered as a young boy in a Kel Dor enclave on the capital world Coruscant. Son of a trade delegate to the Republic, Quest has spent little time on his homeworld of Dorin. While The Kel Dor enclave was made as hospitable as possible to his people — a large domed settlement in which the natural atmosphere of Dorin was allowed to predominate — he was nonetheless quite aware of his differences compared to the majority of oxygen-breathing sentients of the Republic. While his breath mask and goggles were an outward sign of his otherness, the most important difference was his awareness in the Force. Discovered during a delegation party to the Jedi Temple, Quest willingly left with the Jedi, his parents proud the Force would manifest itself in their son, and taken as Padawan by the Gand Master Kree.

Where Master Kree is introspective, Quest is deterministic, and where Kree is deliberate, Quest is eager to join in action. But the one thing both master and padawan shares is the belief that the best defense is a good offense. Thankfully Quest has not been challenged in this philosophy, but he is often the first into action.

Echoes from the Battle of the Emerald Cliffs are resonating through the Vargis Tau system. With the destruction of his second base on the jungle world of Zebulon Prime led the pirate lord Ral Duris to flee the system, taking his flagship Obsidan Phoenix and his few surviving starfighters with him.

Some claim he’s withdrawn to a shadowport somewhere in the Outer Rim to plot his revenge; others say he’s taken up hunting prey near the Taris system, still others say he’s on Nar Shaddaa recruiting bounty hunters to strike back at those who destroyed his bases and captured two starships. (more…)

Master Edan Photona is a long-time fixture at the Unified Force Academy. Master Photana provides a challenging contrast and perspective to the core teachings at the UFA.

Unlike many of the senior masters at the Zebulon Academy, Photana eschews the Unified Force philosophy, instead cautioning students to be mindful of the Living Force. According to Master Photana, jedi should live in the moment, trust in their instincts, and open their minds to living things and their contributions to (and interactions with) the greater Force.
